Cycle the South Burnett Rail Trail

What is the South Burnett Rail Trail?

The South Burnett Rail Trail is an extension to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail and has been open since September 2017. Meandering alongside old railway lines, the trail winds its way through idyllic farmland, dense eucalyptus forests, and charming rural communities, along a well maintained cycle trail, thanks to the good work of the South Burnett Council. From Kingaroy to Murgon the 42km trail passes through seven towns with a variety of cafes, pubs, restaurants and other highlights to stop off at along the way.

How long is the South Burnett Rail Trail?

The South Burnett Rail Trail is 42 km long and is sealed bitumen which makes it Queensland's longest sealed rail trail.

What are the cycling conditions like on the South Burnett Rail Trail?

Cycling conditions are great as the track is well maintained by the local council. The trail is well signed, has bubblers and shelters along the track with only a few country road crossings to pass over. The track is also sealed bitumen which makes it a smooth ride. There is also the South Burnett Rail Trail Users Association which is a community group that helps with the enhancement and extension of the rail trail.

Kingaroy Regional Art Gallery

An Art Deco building that exhibitions local's and visiting artists' work across three different galleries. Open Monday to Saturday.

The Grand Hotel in Wooroolin

The perfect spot to stop at for a pub lunch or dinner. This cosy old pub has a long rich history first opening its doors in 1916. We recommend having the steak sandwich followed by a nice cold beer.

Ficks Crossing

A lovely spot to stop for a picnic on the banks of Barambah Creek. You can also enjoy a swim in the river or alternatively hire a kayak to explore further down the river.

Kingsley Grove Estate

Founded in 1998 by the Berry family, this winery offers a variety of different wines and now also makes ice cream. The Kingsley cellar door is open from 10pm to 5pm 7 days a week for wine tasting.

The Peanut Van

A must-try with a range of different flavoured hot peanuts. The Peanut Van has been selling peanuts for over 40 years. We recommend trying the salted caramel peanuts they are delicious.

Pottique Lavender Farm

Wander the lavender-filled fields and pick your own lavender. You can also taste some of their lavender liquor or tea.

How can I cycle the South Burnett Rail Trail?

Australian Cycle Tours offers a self-guided bike ride where you will cycle along the South Burnett Rail Trail as well as the Brisbane Valley and Kilkivan Rail Trail. This is an 8-day trip that covers over 300 km, where you will cycle through a variety of different terrains including gravel, dirt and asphalt. Accommodation ranges between 2-3 star hotels and motels located close to town or the bike path.

The trip also includes daily luggage transfers so you don’t have to worry about carrying around heavy bags all day, just pack a small day pack and plenty of water for the day's cycle. Once the trip is finished you will also get a transfer from Kilkivan back to Ipswich.
