7 Great Things About a Mudgee Cycling Trip
A cycling holiday to Mudgee is just what we need.
It sounds like an active traveller's ideal getaway: getting some fresh country air while exploring one of New South Wales' finest regional towns; pedalling along carefree cycleways from world-class cellar door to world-class cellar door; feasting on gourmet foods with your only concern whether you'll be able to cycle to your boutique accommodation if you eat another wedge of brie (don't worry, you'll be right).
While we could have stopped at just one thing, here are seven reasons why a Mudgee cycling trip is so great.
1. Mudgee's Famous Wine

Let's start off with the one thing on everyone's lips (or what you wish was on your lips...and down your throat...).
Like any great bottle of vino, the Mudgee Wine Region is maturing superbly and getting more attention as one of Australia’s must-visit destinations. The area claims to have some of Australia’s oldest vineyards (first planted in 1858!) as well as the highest, with the grapes thriving in the fertile soils and temperate climate.
Mudgee is renowned for its classic styles of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as the birthplace of Australian Chardonnay. It’s also worth keeping an eye on the expanding selection of pinot grigio, tempranillo and Sangiovese varieties.
2. Regional Gourmet Food

In Mudgee, there is no shortage of fine restaurants and cafes where you can reward yourself with delicious treats and fresh foods.
As part of the Mudgee Explorer itinerary, we offer several dining recommendations, including
Zin House, which specialise in regionalised long lunches, and the
di Lusso Winery, famous for their home-cooked Italian cuisine.
3. Let time float by at Mudgee's Cellar doors and Wineries

Yes, we’ve already mentioned how top-notch the wines of Mudgee are. However, the magnificent Mudgee wineries, with their views of sprawling vineyards and country charms, deserves its own mention.
If you haven’t visited any of Australia’s wineries yet, then you really are missing out. There’s something magical about sitting at a cellar door and hearing about a wine’s intricacies from a viticulturist while they pour you samples. On your Mudgee cycling itinerary, you’ll experience some of Mudgee’s best:
Petersons Wines,
Pieter van Gent Winery, the
Moothi Estate, and others.
4. Easy access from Sydney

5. Visit the Henry Lawson Memorial

Pay your respects to one of Australia’s most well-known bush poets and writers, Henry Lawson. There’s a national reserve and plaque at his childhood home in Eurunderee, near Mudgee, which is on the cycle route. For a more informative look into the life of Henry Lawson, you can visit the
Henry Lawson Centre in neighbouring Gulgong.
6. Enjoy the benefits of a centre-based cycling adventure

The Mudgee Explorer is a centre-based trip, meaning you’ll stay at the same great accommodation for the duration of your tour. Centre-based trips have good benefits, such as being able to become fully immersed in an area, the freedom of not following a strict itinerary, and, best of all, only needing to unpack once!
7. Gentle, Family Friendly Cycling

The cycling in Mudgee is generally as easy going as the town itself. The bike paths are mainly on bitumen and quiet roads, and while there is the occasional mining truck driving by, the cycleways will keep you at a safe distance.
There are approximately between 2-4 hours of cycling each day, although as this is a self-guided trip the pace and schedule is ultimately up to you. We grade the trip as family friendly and suitable for those at an introductory to moderate cycling ability.
