10 Amazing Experiences in the Tweed Valley
It's a great time to be a cyclist with the Tweed Valley section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail officially open. This section of the rail trail is 24km long and is part of our
6-day Northern Rivers and Tweed Valley cycle trip. Here are 10 amazing experiences to do while you visit this stunning region of New South Wales.
1. Visit the Tweed River House Restaurant
Sitting on the river bank of the Tweed, this bar and bistro is absolutely stunning and offers some great views of the Hinterland ranges. With a delicious selection of food which won them the chef hat from the 2023 Australian Good Food Guide Awards. We would recommend trying the Bungalora pork, which is a pork cutlet dish with an assortment of veggies, crackle crumble and flavours.
2. Buck's Farm
Buck's Farm, owned by Gerard ‘Buck’ Buchanan, is 350 acres and produces many different fruit and vegetables but is widely known for its finger limes with many top restaurants and chefs treating them as a delicacy. Buck's Farm is found in Chillingham and offers you the chance to wander through 20 different local bush tucker species, with a shop also located on the premises. We recommend buying some frozen chocolate-coated bananas before you leave to put in your pannier bag so you snack while you cycle.
3. Have a Picnic in Wollumbin National Park
This world heritage-listed national park offers many trails to cycle or walk along with views of Mount Warning (also known as Wollumbin). There are also many fantastic spots to sit down, relax and have a picnic while taking in all the incredible scenery. We recommend walking the Lyrebird track which is host to some great views of the rainforest.
4. Dreamtime Beach
After a long day of cycling, you'll definitely want to cool off at one of the many beaches in this region. We recommend stopping off at Dreamtime Beach located on the southern side of Fingal Head. Dreamtime Beach stretches 5km along the coastline so there is no shortage of spots to sunbake or to enjoy the water.
5. Earth Beer Company
This local brewery brews all its beer using solar power and is the perfect spot to grab a drink after an afternoon of cycling. They offer a range of delicious and unique beers to taste test including their Avocado Kolsch and Mango Weisse bier. The brewery is only open Friday, Saturday and Sunday and is well worth the visit for all beer enthusiasts. Located in Cudgen, this is perfect to visit on day 5 of the Northern Rivers tour.
6. Visit the Town of Tyalgum
This beautiful countryside town is full of vintage shops, great restaurants and cosy cafes to check out. We recommend stopping off at
Flutterbies which is a cafe in a small heritage building with seating inside and outside and is the perfect spot for lunch.
7. Tweed Regional Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre
This art gallery offers 7 different exhibitions ranging from historical to contemporary exhibitions. It also celebrates the life of Margaret Olley, Australia’s most celebrated painter of still life and interiors. Open Wednesday to Sunday it's definitely worth visiting with free entry or a guided tour if you would like to learn even more. Located in South Murwillumbah so easily accessible on our tour.
8. Makers & Finders Market Murwillumbah
The Makers and Finders market offers a range of stalls selling produce, collectables, vintage wear and other goods to purchase. After you have finished wandering around the markets you can head over to the M-Arts Precinct which is just across the road and has a range of galleries, restaurants and other small businesses to check out. It opens on the 3rd Saturday of every month.
9. Hire a Kayak on the Tweed River
Want a break from cycling? Hire a kayak and explore the Tweed Rivers. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife and vibrant scenery along the river and cool off by jumping in the river. Perfect for all travellers visiting the region there is also a guided kayak tour option as well if you have left yourself enough time or hire a kayak for $25 an hour at Cudgen Creek for a self-guided tour.
10. Eat at Bistro Livi
Bistro Livi is a lively fine-dining restaurant open from Wednesday to Saturday and is located in the art deco building in M-arts Prescient. The restaurant has a small menu but focuses on using local produce from the Northern Rivers. With the menu based on Spanish-inspired dishes and changing weekly, you are always sure there is going to be something delicious on the menu.
