  • Enjoy cycling on a mixture of the dedicated cycle path through the South Burnett region and quiet country roads
  • Meet the locals in the towns and villages you pass through
  • Stop off at local cafes along the trial
  • Visit the Dairy Museum in Murgon
  • Enjoy a scrumptious lunch in the Moffatdale Wine Region

The South Burnett Rail Trail is a premium cycle route following a paved trail from Kingaroy to Murgon. The Rail Trail itself is a 42km cycle passing through quaint villages and fertile farmland. Our trip also includes a cycle to the Moffatdale Wine Region, where award-winning winemakers and chefs make a visit to this region truly memorable.

The cycle tour begins in Kingaroy, affectionately titled the peanut capital of Australia. Leaving Kingaroy there are some great long cycling stretches that sweep across broad horizons and open countryside as you head north before passing through native forests interspersed with cattle farms and rural holdings. You’ll pass through classic Queensland towns including Crawford, Memerambi, Wooroolin and Wondai. After a night in Murgon cycle to the Moffartdale Wine Region with wine varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Verdelho, Semillon, Muscat, Tempranillo, Viognier, Saperavi, Fiano, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, Tinta Cao and more. This region is home to a few fine dining options where a big appetite will be well catered for. Remember to leave room in your panniers to store some excellent wines from the cellar doors or gin from the local distillery. There are also options to purchase great local produce including a range of fine olive oils, honey, vinegars and more.

With all your logistics taken care of including transfers, bike hire, luggage transfers and accommodation, all you need to do is enjoy the cycle day and take in the South Burnett region as you travel through South Burnett Rail Trail and Moffatdale Wine Region by bike.

Itinerary

On arrival in Kingaroy, make your way to the joining hotel. Kingaroy is a reasonably large rural Queensland city of over 10,000 people. The accommodation is centrally located so you will be within walking distance of a range of restaurants, bars and clubs. And yes, Kingaroy does have a "big thing’" the Big Peanut which is located in Lions Park. If you plan to travel by bus to Kingaroy, please note the buses only run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Overnight: Kingaroy.

Meals:  Nil

The South Burnett Rail Trail starts right in the middle of town at the old train station, conveniently located close to your hotel. There are some long stretches of trail along this section with sweeping views across broad horizons. Today you’ll cycle through fertile farming areas with deep red soil where the area is particularly noted for growing peanuts. Great lunch or refreshment stops can be found in either Wooroolin or Wondai. Wooroolin is a small, typical Queensland town located right on the edge of a large wetlands area where you could stop for a short walk. It also has a great little cafe which could be a good morning coffee stop. As you continue on the trail you will pass through Wondai and you can visit the Timber Museum that displays the town's timber harvesting history. There is also a well presented regional art gallery worth a quick visit. Wondai is the largest town on the trail and is a quintessential inland Queensland town with a couple of grand Queensland style wooden hotels with huge balconies. It is also a great place to stop for lunch, with offerings from small cafes, pub meals and restaurants. Or there is a lovely little restaurant and tea room where you can enjoy its famous country style scones with cream. After lunch it is on to Murgon and your accommodation for the night. In Murgon you can visit the Queensland Dairy & Heritage Museum right on the edge of town. If you are there on the 2nd Sunday of the month, we recommend taking a wander around the CBD Markets. Ascent: 213m, Descent: 325m. Overnight: Murgon.

Meals:  Nil

Begin your day in Murgon which derives its name from an Aboriginal word meaning lily pond. Murgon is the closest major town to the famous Aboriginal Reserve, originally known as Barambah Aboriginal Reserve and today known as Cherbourg. Murgon has a large Indigenous population of around 19 percent compared with the national average of 2.7 percent. You can visit the Ration Shed Museum at Cherbourg and learn how life was and is for this Aboriginal community. From Murgon you’ll cycle north along a section of the Kingaroy Killikan Rail Trail before leaving the trail and cycling east to the Moffatdale Wine Region. In Moffatdale you’ll find a number of popular wineries and restaurants with delightful artisan menus focusing on quality food. It is an easy cycle to this region along the well used Moffatdale Cycle Route and at just 28km each way you’ll have plenty of time to visit the cellar doors, stop by a gin distillery, sample and purchase some great local produce, and stop for lunch. And with an impressive range of wine varieties including Shiraz, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot and Verdelho (to name a few) there is bound to be a wine to suit your palate. Ascent: 407m, Descent: 407m. Overnight: Murgon.

Meals:  Nil

There is time this morning to visit the Murgon Dairy and History Museum which has expansive displays of old dairy and other rural machinery and memorabilia dating back to a bygone era. The museum itself is set in a lovely bush setting with historic buildings and gardens. It's worth a visit just to enjoy the location. The cycle back along the South Burnett Rail Trail gives you the opportunity to take in the amazing vistas from a different perspective and a chance to spend time in places you passed though on your journey north. If you missed the tea house in Wondai or perhaps want to head back for a second helping of freshly baked scones you’ll have time to swing by here on your journey south. On arrival in Kingaroy, celebrate the end of your cycle tour with a nice meal in the pub. Ascent: 313m, Descent: 201m. Overnight Kingaroy.
