Northern Rivers Rail Trail Trip highlights

  • Experience the new Northern Rivers Rail Trail
  • Enjoy the views of Wollumbin as you cycle on the Rail Trail
  • Enjoy the independence of self guided cycling with all logistics taken care of for you

This short cycle journey is based in Murwillumbah and takes you along the Northern Rivers Rail Trail between Murwillumbah and Crabbes Creek. Keen cyclists can cycle both directions of the Rail Trail, giving you a change to enjoy the view of Wollumbin (Mt Warning) as you cycle back to Murwillumbah. Or we can arrange a transfer to meet you at Mooball and return you to your accommodation in Murwillumbah.

We'll provide you with electric bikes and route information, and will book you two nights of accommodation in Murwillumbah. This gives you the freedom to cycle at your own pace and enjoy the best the Northern Rivers Rail Trail has to offer.

Itinerary

On arrival in Murwillumbah, make your way to the joining hotel. Transfer options are available from Gold Coast Airport to Murwillumbah. This afternoon you can take some time to explore the town, with its colourful and creative atmosphere typical of the Northern Rivers. Sample creamy Brie at Kat Harvey Cheese, Ben Leonardi's pastries at Ben's Patisserie and dine in style at Bistro Livi.

Today's ride starts by completing the recently opened and initial stage of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, currently running from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek. It is a relatively short but enjoyable journey as you cycle through farming regions, small towns and native bushland. There are also a couple of tunnels to keep things interesting. At the end of the NRRT you will need to cycle back to Mooball (4km) where will transfer you back to Murwillumbah where you will spend the night. If you have plenty of energy left it is possible to cycle all the way back to Murwillumbah, bringing the total distance cycled 48km.

The trip concludes this morning. If you haven't yet visited the Margaret Olley Art Gallery we recommend doing this before you leave.

Grading

Introductory
3

This self guided trip involves 1 day of cycling on a variety of surfaces along a dedicated rail trail. This will take you between 4 and 6 hours but will be shorter if you choose to be transferred back to Murwillumbah at the end of the rail trail. Being a self-guided trip you determine the pace and schedule. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health and be a capable cyclist. Be prepared for potential variable weather conditions which can also add to the timing and comfort of a trip, for example riding into a head wind will take more time than when the wind is behind you. If you decided to bring your own bike and it is not an e-bike, the overall grading of the trip changes to moderate to hard. Please ensure that your bike is fit for purpose - road bikes are not suitable for this trip unless they have been fitted with wider tread tyres. The best bike is a hybrid, gravel bike or mountain bike. We provide an e-mountain bike as part of this tour.
