The Central West Tablelands are a region rich in history and diverse scenery. The area is the ancestral home for the Indigenous Dabee Clan who are part of the Wiradjuri people, the largest Aboriginal group in NSW. In the late 1800s the area became known for its large pastoral properties, and the nearby nearby Turon River gold fields saw Rylstone become a thriving township and government centre. Today Kandos and Rylstone are a tight-community and are linked by an excellent seven kilometre cycleway.

Over four days of cycling you’ll cover much of what defines this region including cycling though native bushland, along quiet backroads though pastoral sheep country, and along ridge lines with amazing views to the peaks in the distance. You will also cycle through areas renowned for bird sightings and pass by koala habitat. By bike you’ll follow country roads, passing swamps and amazing rock formations known as pagodas. The first two days of the trip are spent in Rylstone before you spend two nights in the Ganguddy region of the Wollemi National Park staying in a unique cottage. While in the Ganguddy region there are opportunities to add kayaking and an Indigenous immersion walk. In Rylstone you can discover museums, art galleries and vineyards, and dine on superb international cuisine to compliment the cycling experience.

Itinerary

Arrive Rylstone with the day free to visit the North East Wiradjuri Cultural Centre in Kandos and the colourful township of Rylstone with its great cafes and craft shops as well as the Indigenous Guluu Gallery. The towns of Kandos and Rylstone are just seven kilometres apart and linked by a dedicated cycle path. Pre-dating the European history of the towns is the Indigenous Wiradjuri people who lived and held a spiritual connection to the land in this area. In the Rylstone-Kandos region, both then and now, live the Dabee Clan. There are some excellent restaurants in Rylstone to choose from for your evening meal. Overnight: Rylstone or upgrade to stay in Kandos

The route today follows the old railway towards the township of Lue from Rylstone. Heading north west you leave behind the small farms and rural properties surrounding the township and soon enter some heavily wooded native bushland. Later the terrain opens again to reveal large sheep farming properties, known as sheep stations. In fact, it is very likely you may share the road with a roaming sheep (or two) as you cycle through a working sheep station. After crossing the highway you will start the clockwise loop that will take you back to Rylstone along back country roads many locals haven’t travelled. Take the time to look into the tree tops (perhaps not while cycling) as this area just north of the highway is prime Koala habitat. It is a full day of cycling but a really good mix of native bushland, panoramic views, working farms and rural landscape while cycling along very low traffic backroads. (+515m/-515m) Overnight: Rylstone

A special day as you head east to the boundary of the Wollemi National Park and your farm stay accommodation. En route pass swamps and rocky outcrops before coming into pagoda country, rock formations that have been weathered over millennia to create distinctive formations that are emblematic to this region. You will pass right by these formations as you cycle closer to the Wollemi. Your cycle day may finish when you arrive at your farm stay accommodation but with your accommodation nestled in a private valley you are free to walk and explore and experience a location disconnected from a hectic world. (+372m/-279m) Overnight: Ganguddy region

Meals:  B,D

Your farmstay is conveniently located at the boundary of the Wollemi National Park which guests can access via a private trail on bike and foot or alternatively you can cycle the whole way via the public road. Either way you’ll find yourself at the Ganguddy Reserve a popular National Parks camping and recreation location. Leaving from the lakeside is a network of easy and not so easy National Park walking trails including the popular Pagoda walk that takes you to an amazing viewing location across the lake and surrounding landscape. An optional kayaking trip, either guided or self guided, is available from September school holidays until the end of the Easter break, daily during school holidays and otherwise on weekends. Ask us for details including prices. There is also the option to add an Indigenous experience today - this includes an immersive connection to Wiradyuri culture and a Welcome to Country in Ganguddy during a 40 minute low impact bushwalk with an Indigenous guide. Details and price on request. Back at the farmstay, take the time to sit and witness the end of day as daylight gives way to a million star night. Overnight: Ganguddy region

A leisurely ride marks your final day of the trip as you return to Rylstone. The route takes you almost directly west until the mountain range known as the ‘Coomber Melon’ comes into view after which you veer to the left and cycle along the western face. Nestled in the shadow of the range, literally at its base is the small township of Kandos, a former mining town which for decades supplied cement to Sydney including the cement required for the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. With the closure of the mine around a decade ago it is a town redefining itself. Over the previous 4 days of cycling you have travelled along some amazing backroads and through varied landscapes from rural pastures to native bushland yet for many there is a sense of an untold story, the story of the Indigenous people and culture of this region. The Cultural Centre has some great displays outlining the Indigenous history of the area and early contact with European settlers. It is also a gallery that celebrates survival with displays of contemporary Indigenous art. Kandos and Rylstone are linked by a 7km cycleway, a perfect way to finish your epic cycle journey. (+187m/-274m) The trip concludes on your return to Rylstone. There is no accommodation included tonight but we can assist if you would like to spend an additional night in Rylstone.

This self guided trip involves 4 days of cycling, on mainly rural dirt roads and a few sections of bitumen including a 7km dedicated cycleway. Some sections of the daily cycles may have traffic. Daily activity is usually between 4 and 6 hours but some days might be longer depending on your overall pace on riding a bike. E-Bikes are supplied which ensures easy ascents on the hills. If you bring your own bike, a discount is provided, but ensure it is suitable for the terrain - road bikes are not suitable due to the dirt sections and at times poor state of the road. Hybrid, gravel and mountain bikes are best suited. Being a self guided trip you determine the pace and schedule. You will need a good level of fitness, good health and be an experienced cyclist. Be prepared for potential variable weather conditions which can also add to the timing and comfort of a trip, for example riding into a head wind will take more time than when the wind is behind you, or cycling along a dirt section of the road in wet weather will require extra care.
